Who Are Atelier Wen Watches?
Breaking New Ground while Embracing Tradition
Usually, when we think of watches made in China, quality and craftsmanship don’t necessarily come to mind. Atelier Wen is redefining modern Chinese watchmaking by blending French creativity with Chinese craftsmanship. The brand’s name reflects its philosophy—“Atelier” means workshop in French, while Wén (文) symbolizes culture in Chinese. With a mission to celebrate Chinese horology, Atelier Wen showcases exceptional craftsmanship, artistic traditions, and modern design to a global audience at a very approachable price point.
For too long, Chinese watchmaking has remained in the shadows of European luxury brands. Yet, the country’s horological roots run deep, with skilled artisans and centuries-old techniques that deserve recognition. Atelier Wen is here to change that narrative, bringing Chinese watchmaking to the forefront of the industry.

A French Duo with a Passion for China
This is such a unique and fascinating story. Atelier Wen was founded by two French entrepreneurs, Wilfried Buiron and Robin Tallendier, united by their deep passion for Chinese culture and watchmaking.
Wilfried Buiron – The Strategic Mind
Born in Hong Kong, fluent in Mandarin
Graduate of Peking University & Tsinghua University
Experienced entrepreneur, currently CEO of Zaapi, a digital commerce startup
Robin Tallendier – The Creative Visionary
Began collecting watches at 14 years old
Worked for Christie’s London & the French Chamber of Watchmaking in Shanghai
Appointed advisor to the China Horologe Association in 2016
Together, they form the perfect balance of creativity and execution, pioneering a new era for Chinese watchmaking.
The Journey: From Vision to Reality
Atelier Wen’s story began in 2016, when its founders, while studying in Beijing, noticed a lack of global recognition for Chinese horology. Determined to change this perception, they launched Atelier Wen in 2018 to create high-quality watches with a distinct Chinese identity.
Key Dates
2018 – Debuted Porcelain Odyssey on Kickstarter, reaching its goal in under 30 minutes
2020 – Began work on a second collection, pushing the boundaries of Chinese watchmaking
2022 – Launched Perception, selling out the initial batch in 16 hours
Present – Expanding the brand and setting new benchmarks in fine Chinese watchmaking
Dial Finishing
What sets this brand apart is its outstanding quality details and price point. Something of similar quality from a Swiss brand would cost close to double if not more.
Each dial is handcrafted by Master Chen, requiring eight hours per piece. Available in grey, salmon, and ice blue, the dials are hand-turned on a self-built rose engine, for which he holds a Chinese patent.
Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron found Master Chen through a mutual contact in Beijing, proposing a custom guilloché design for their limited-production watch. Initially hesitant—having only worked on small Swiss orders—he embraced the challenge, creating the four-layer Sunmao dial.
Availability & Price Point
Atelier Wen is a highly exclusive brand, with only eight authorized retailers worldwide—three of which are in the United States. Fortunately, I work with one of these select retailers, so if a piece from the core collection is available, I can definitely help you secure it.
Unlike mass-produced luxury brands, Atelier Wen focuses on craftsmanship, exclusivity, and refined details. With its exceptional finishing and attention to detail, you’d expect the brand to fall within the $5,000–$10,000 range. However, its timepieces are surprisingly well-priced under $4,000, making them one of the best value luxury watches on the market.
You don’t need to be in the big leagues to own a beautifully crafted timepiece—Atelier Wen proves that exclusivity and quality can still be attainable.
Due to the unpredictable and volatile market on certain Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet watches, prices are subject to change.
